Making an Edwardian Vest out of Quilting Cotton
This month, I found myself in a time crunch and had to whip up a project in just a few days. The result? A one-of-a-kind vest that I absolutely love! Using a beautiful mix of pink, burgundy, green, blue, and white quilting cottons, I created a vest that's both rustic and charming, with colors that blend perfectly together.
The process wasn’t without its challenges-turning a single-breasted pattern into a double-breasted design was tricky, especially since the Keystone Guide didn't quite cover the overlap needed for the buttons. Despite this, the vest turned out wonderfully, though it’s still just a bit looser than I’d like.

I know I’m super late to comment but i thought id share an experience i had with one of these books. I chose what i thought would be easy…a nightgown. I tried scaling it the same way you did where the proportion was used on the horizontal measurements but not the height and the yoke came out a completely different shape. I asked about it on a facebook group that uses these books a lot and they all said that the proportion scale needed to be used on the bodice height as well. So when I redrafted the yoke it did come out correctly. I was told to be careful with the height of the scale on skirts, legs, and length of the body on the nightgown. Lol it was quite the learning experience. Your shirtwaist did turn out beautifully though! Congratulations for sticking with it.
So weird! I wish the instructions were more clear. This next video I'm using the Keystone guide, which is much more detailed, so hopefully it'll turn out better lol.

I've made several patterns from this book. I started with a simple skirt. I made the pattern 3x! And 3 different mock-ups for the skirt! Since I was using an expensive wool Cashmere, i wanted to make sure the skirt was correct. I cut everything and made it. Even to this day, even though the whole entire ensemble looks beautiful with all the vintage lace, Im still not happy with the pattern. The next skirt I made was a Truly Victorian walking skirt. Which I wear all the time. A lot of these patterns need tweeking. You have to do mock-ups before cutting!!! Finish in the usual manner....???🤔 Love your videos..😊

I must say this has been an experience for you to give up the old corset and all, to make the new one; but I think you really pulled it off! Congratulations, it's beautiful! I think the design of the new one is simple and elegant. I do like the little puff lining inside the bottom of the corset. It helps it to lay much better and accentuates the waist. I missed the terminology, maybe it's the corset "skirt?" Anyway, you know what I mean. Lots of work and a lot of fun for both you and Jo. Now you need to make one for yourself!

Wow! What an experience! I think you should make up your own pattern book! You have taken an artistic design conception and a pattern that clearly doesn't replicate the concept and have reworked both into your very own style! Creatively clever to say the least! And the hat! I have made items from this book, but I was using their ruler in both directions. I need to re-read the initial chapters about that. Your chemise turned out lovely and your helper is a great yard stick holder downer 😛👶
Thank you! Yeah, the instructions are a bit confusing at first, but once you get it, the process is pretty simple.
I too used the scale ruler for my bust size for the width measurements too, because the instructions actually tell us to! On page 7, the 2nd paragraph down, beginning ‘This gives all the numbers….’ The 3rd sentence says: Place the scale on the short arm of the square - be sure to use the bust measure as for the baseline. My pattern came out way too long and I was so disappointed. Kyla, can you tell us exactly where you see the instruction to use a normal tape measure for the width measurements please. I’ve looked and looked but can’t find it. It certainly makes more sense!
It's never made super clear, but here are a few passages that lead me to believe you are supposed to use the bust scale ruler for the horizontal measures and a regular ruler for the vertical: Page 1: "This combination of proportional and inch measurements makes the Diamond Cutting System a 'hybrid' system." Page 5: "The Diamond Cutting System consists of a square... A set of scales, a tape measure..." (Tape measure and square are shown to have regular inches. The square allows either side of it to have one of the scales attached to it) Page 339 (and many others) "use the scale corresponding with the bust measure to draft this pattern... Regulate the length by the tape measure" Again, it's never made super clear, but these references lead me to believe you're supposed to use the scale for horizontal and the tape measure for the vertical. However, after making this chemise and the blouse on 339, I think you should use two different scales where necessary, the bust (or waist) measure for the horizontal, and some other scale for the vertical as needed.
What scale for the vertical? It takes a bit of clever math, but here's the simplest explanation I can manage: With some simple measuring, I found that the 30 scale is exactly the same as inches. To find the ratio of any of the other scales, simply divide (S)cale by 30: 34 scale's ratio: 34 ÷ 30 = 1.33 26 scale's ratio: 26 ÷ 30 = 0.87 Then, measure on yourself the vertical height you want your finished garment to be. Let's say you're making the blouse on 339. The center back is about 14 3/8" long, and my center back measurement is 16" long. So, to find what scale I need to use, I need to find the similar ratio: (desired measurement)/(One-to-one measurement) = scale ratio 16 ÷ 14.375 = 1.113 Ratio × 30 = needed scale 1.113 × 30 = 33.39 (rounded up is 34) So, I would use the 34 scale for the vertical measurements and my waist + 10 for my bust measurement (I'm small busted, so my actual bust measurement of 35 doesn't fit my shoulders) Hope this helps!
